Bad times ahead for Sony?

When I made videogames, it was widely written that Sony relied on the success of the Playstation system and game sales to prop up big losses in their movie studios, and flat sales in electronics hardware.

The PS2 system was another success, at least as far as generating income for Japan’s most famous brand name.

I heard from games biz insiders that Sony’s Playstation 3 did not impress at this year’s E3 conference. Now this article comes along stating that Sony is losing the videogame wars with Microsoft and Nintendo, and accusing the company of fatal arrogance.

We’ll see what the reaction this Fall is to the P3. I’m sure that there will be the usual line-ups and people sleeping outside the stores (Sony would be wise just to pay fans to do this). A year from now we’ll see what the console sales are like, and importantly, if the games are any good.
